What is Family Law Mediation?

Family law mediation is:

  • Private and confidential
  • Fair and respectful
  • Faster, cheaper and far less stressful than a court battle

How does it work?

People working together at a table

1.    You contact us by phone or by email.

2.    We invite the other person to take part in a family law mediation.

3.    A mediation session is arranged at a time and place that suits you.

4.    The agreement you reach at mediation can be made legally binding and enforceable, without going to court.

Our Dispute Resolution Services

We offer a range of dispute resolution services, including:

  • Private family law mediation – an informal, but structured, process which allows you to resolve the issues that are important to you with the help of a skilled impartial mediator
  • Family Dispute Resolution – for the mediation of parenting disputes in accordance with Commonwealth government regulations
  • Private conciliation conferences – for mediation conducted in the style of conciliation conferences in the family law courts
  • Mediation-style conferences – for informal settlement conferences where an independent chairperson can improve the prospects of settlement

All of these services are able to be conducted with or without the involvement of lawyers.

All of these services are able to be conducted in person, by telephone, or by video conferencing.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much does it cost?

$990 (including GST) per person per half-day.  We do not charge for any of the “extras” that other mediation services often charge for, such as intake sessions or reading documents.

  • How long does it take?

Your family law mediation can be held within days of your first enquiry if that is convenient for all parties.  Your family law mediation can be arranged for a half day, a full day, or several sessions, depending on the number and complexity of the issues in dispute.

  • How much experience do your mediators have?

Our senior mediator, Stuart Barr, has been mediating family law disputes since 1996.  He is accredited under the National Mediator Accreditation System and has successfully conducted hundreds of mediations as an accredited Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner.  He has experience in both domestic and international family law disputes, parenting and financial issues, legal aid conferences and multi-million-dollar property settlements, mediations for unrepresented parties and highly-contested court cases.  In 2017, he was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study cross-cultural family dispute resolution internationally.

  • Do I have to be in the same room as my partner?

Only if you are comfortable doing that.  We can also conduct “shuttle mediations” which allow you to resolve your dispute without coming into contact with your partner.
