DBH to host their 10th Biggest Morning Tea raising money for Cancer Council

Tanis Blines, Systems Administration Manager at DBH Lawyers, will celebrate 10 years of Morning Teas this May while raising vital funds for cancer prevention, research and support services.

After Mrs Blines’ husband was diagnosed with incurable Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (Follicular) in December 2005, she approached the partners to hold a Biggest Morning Tea to support the cancer fight.

She explains that the entire office has been touched by cancer either directly or indirectly.

“It’s not just me affected by cancer. Unfortunately there would be very few staff who have not been affected by cancer,” Mrs Blines said.

In 2012 a much loved DBH staff member lost their battle to cancer with another staff member currently battling hard after being diagnosed in August 2014.

Since their inaugural Morning Tea, DBH has raised over $13,000 for Cancer Council including the dollar matching that the company has contributed.

“The partners of DBH have never wavered in their full support of this event – one of our major fundraising activities,” she says. “They believe in the cause and have a long-standing commitment to community involvement.”

While Mrs Blines purchases most of the food herself, she does receive help from her employers, colleagues and service providers.

Up to 60 staff members are charged a small entry fee for the copious amounts of goodies, several raffles are presented, as well as a ‘guess the smarties’ competition and the selling of gourmet cupcakes.

Mrs Blines explains the benefits of having a morning tea, including staff interaction and a simple way for businesses to participate in a community-based activity.

“Not only is it a great community service, but a fun way for staff to interact and help contribute to research that could help all of us and our loved ones.

“It provides a time when the staff are focused on participating to aid cancer research while having fun and eating delicious goods – all from the convenience of their place of employment.”

Cancer Council SA Chief Executive, Professor Brenda Wilson encourages all South Australians to get involved this May.

“Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is such a fun event and it makes such a difference,” Professor Wilson said.

“We have seen huge advancements in research breakthroughs, treatment, and significant improvements in survival rates since morning teas first began.”

“With the generous support of our hosts, including Tanis and DBH Lawyers, Cancer Council SA is able to continue to invest in cutting edge research and work towards bringing the defeat of cancer closer through our prevention programs and support services.”

“We thank them for their incredible efforts in the fight against cancer, over the past 10 years!”
