Young Person Disability Care Accommodation

Young people suffering from severe disabilities have been overlooked for some time in Australia and it is currently estimated that in excess of 2,600 young people under the age of 50 are residing in aged care facilities Australia wide.

In South Australia, there are over 50 young people trapped in inadequate care due to a lack of alternatives with a further 30 people in hospital waiting for a full time care option.  These figures do not include those people living at home and being cared for by family members who desperately need relief.  This is an unfortunate situation for both the individual and their families and limits the chances of the person ever living their life to their full potential. Improper surroundings often have further impact on the psychological and physical well-being of disabled individuals due to a lack of rehabilitation programs, therapeutic treatment and interaction with people of a similar age.

A small group of individuals has recognised the tragic situation many young people are in and has begun co-ordinating a project which it hopes will provide a solution in the form of a contemporary, purpose- built property.

Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity International is a not for profit organisation that seeks to eliminate poverty and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. To date, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 200,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1,000,000 people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter.

Peter Pedler (Partner) spent two weeks working on a house re-building project at a small fishing village located on the southern most tip of India.  He worked alongside local tradesmen to rebuild damaged houses.

Sailing
David Tillett (Partner) has been involved in the sport of sailing nearly all of his life and has recently been appointed Chairman of the Jury for Sailing at the Olympic Games in Beijing (2008), a role that he also undertook in Athens in 2004. Prior to his appointment as Chairman, David sat on the jury for both the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000 and Atlanta in 1996.

David also represents the South West Pacific International Sailing Federation Council and is a Director of the International Sailing Federation and member of their Review Board.
